Anthropomorphism

Attributing human qualities — feelings, intentions, dignity — to inanimate objects. Common in hoarding disorder, and it can make releasing an item feel like an act of harm.

If you've ever felt that a stuffed animal would be lonely if you let it go, or that a book would be hurt by being given away, you're describing anthropomorphism. It's not strange — humans are wired to project agency onto things — but in hoarding disorder it can be intense enough to block decisions.

Soft challenges sometimes surface this gently. There's no right answer; if an item feels like it deserves a good home, finding it one (a charity, a friend, a community give-away) can sometimes ease the release.
